Pre-travel thoughts

We will be leaving the house at 2am Saturday morning, arriving at the airport in Honduras some 14 hours later, no doubt exhausted and excited at the same time.

For the past 4 nights I think I have had a cumulative 8 hours of sleep. All kinds of things have kept my mind too busy to rest: thoughts of preparing crafts, to do lists, packing lists, things to get done at work, what will I say in my testimony.  Then self-doubt: am I really this anxious for a one week trip?  Do I really think I can accomplish anything in a week? I have tried my usual tricks of writing everything down to get it out of my head. Then my mind wanders to totally irrelevant tasks, or someone else's task or something going on in someone else's life, some random thing I read on Facebook. Why am I think of that?  Is this busy-ness and tiredness going to distract me from my goals?

I have tried praying my way through it, praying for rest, release of thoughts, praying scripture. I suspect this is all part of the spiritual warfare that the enemy tries, bombarding us with junk, distracting us from what is important. For some it may be seeds of doubt. Fear. Worry. Feelings of not being able. One of my weaknesses is in doing a little bit of many things instead of focusing on one, and now that's where I feel most vulnerable and under attack.

If it is spiritual warfare, or simply my own weakness, I am not going to let it distract me from my real goals. My goals are unchanged: to seek God's will, to serve Him. To have no doubts in what He asks of me, remembering that when He invites me to work with Him, He only expects me to do the possible while He shows up and does the impossible. I can do that!

So added to my prayer list is freedom from distraction, donning my full armor of God and keeping it on. Remembering I am a daughter of the Most High King of Kings and He is on my side. If I do His will not my own, then I cannot go wrong. His plan is always bigger and better than mine. He is always good.

And I listen to the uplifting music and lyrics of Chris Tomlin's "Whom Shall I Fear?"

I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies is always by my side
The One who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies is always by my side
